Atonement for Jews and Christians More Alike Than Not - What are you getting wrong about sin? (Teaching)

The concept of atonement for both Jews and Christians has major flaws that promote unhealthy, even very damaging, spiritual lifestyles. Usually on Yom Kippur, I talk about forgiveness of sins in a more general way as I also walk you through prayers to atone and ask for God’s healing. If you want to go through prayer and petition for your sins and afflictions, please go over the last Yom Kippur service here... My prayers go before you if you go through prayer that was recorded before, but if you want personal and more directed prayer and counsel, then please feel free to contact me.

On this Yom Kippur or Day of Atonement, I will begin to talk in detail about what the people, their leaders, and teachers have wrong about the atonement of sins, as well as what sort of sins that commonly result in the inevitable outcome of living in sins – curses, judgment, or bad afflictions; the consequences of sin. The Christians among you may think this discussion is pointless, because you know Christ forgives all sins and the New Covenant negates all of their penalties. However, that is an incomplete understanding of God’s atonement that does not understand the difference between eternal and temporal atonement.

The New Covenant is all about eternal forgiveness for sins, but it does NOT negate the penalties of sin in this life. That is a simple fact that many Christians forget, overlook, or plainly reject because of bad teachings even though the New Testament is full of teaching about the continued penalties of sins for Christians (for more about the New Covenant and how sin affects eternal salvation, see The True Gospel and Imposters). It is not eternal atonement I will be talking about here, but temporal atonement, which is still very important for the well-being of every Christian and their loved ones.

And for the Jew, temporal atonement is equally important. Yom Kippur is their most sacred of holidays because it is a powerful time of year when the sins of the people are cleansed and the Lord forgives, sometimes in very powerful ways, giving real miracles of healing and release of afflictions because of the prayers of Yom Kippur. And do note, that even though the ways of the Torah or Old Law of Moses that are REQUIRED for the people’s atonement cannot be fulfilled anymore, God still acts in Yom Kippur to atone and forgive the people. This is very important to understand, because it is no longer the Law or Torah that cleanses the people, because it remains unfulfilled without the High Priest and sprinkling of the blood of the sacrifice on the ark of the covenant.

No, it is through God’s lovingkindness and open ears that He grants petitions to cleanse and heal the people on Yom Kippur. It is no longer Judaism that atones the Jew, but God Himself. It is God’s mercy that Judaism benefits from, and it is the same mercy God grants to anyone else, no matter your faith or lack of faith. You need not be Jew nor Christian to receive God’s mercy. You simply need to believe in God and sincerely ask for His help. Such is the care and lovingkindness of El Elyon, God Most High, for all His children.

But equally for all the children of God, whether Jew or Christian or Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, any other sect, atheist, or no religion at all, everyone is subject to God’s laws for mankind and the penalties for violating them; sin will have serious consequences in your lives now, no matter who you are or what your faith is. And of important note to believers, serious consequences continue to hold true EVEN if you are granted God’s forgiveness from prayers of repentance, atonement, and deliverance, like most Christians, Jews, and Muslims commonly do.

So unlike the most popular teachers, who only tell you the grace of Christ or the cleansing of Yom Kippur releases all your guilt for sin so you don’t have to worry about it anymore, I will give you the best picture of atonement and sin that addresses issues most other teachers fail in; that is, they portray sin as inconsequential because God “always” forgives and blesses, and so they teach the people that sin is simply negated and the people have no accountability (I addressed this specifically in Word for Yom Teruah/Rosh Hashanah and the High Holidays 2024). How untrue and deadly these poisonous false teachings are!

For the Jew, these false beliefs are even more deadly, because God said, "Cursed is the one who does not fulfill the words of this Law [the Torah] by doing them (Devarim/Deuteronomy 27:26). And so Judaism MUST fulfill ALL the Torah as God gave or be cursed. That is because God made it a sin for followers of Torah, which is everyone in Judaism, to be cursed if they do not follow ALL the Law as He originally gave it (Devarim/Deuteronomy 28:15). That's because God also said about Torah, "You shall not add to [Torah] neither shall you subtract from it," making it a sin to change Torah (Devarim/Deuteronomy 4:2). Jews will argue that their sages were and are still authorized to change Torah, however, that is not true.

Only the truly anointed of El Elyon are authorized to change Torah, and when God broke the power of the kohanim (Jewish priests) for Torah when the last of the prophets of old were gone, there were no more authorized priests to change Torah. The very last prophets recorded in the Tanakh (Old Testament Bible) were the last whom had authority to change Torah. All the Jewish sages since were only authorized to be judges of Torah so they could continue to administer to Judaism. So when Judaism misinterprets Torah and lives by unauthorized "Torah" that does not fulfil true Torah, as has been happening for millennia, they live under compounded sins and curse upon curse, even though they are still God's blessed and chosen people (for more about how Judaism continues in sin, see The significance of Israel under attackDo not give in to overcompensation, Withholding Redemption and Denying AccountabilityDaughter Israel, Make Right Your Ways, A word of genocide and ethnic cleansing to Israel, and God's Offering for All In Judaism).

All the bad things happening to people and communities of faith shows that God surely holds you and the people accountable for what you do wrong. He will judge ALL sin (Colossians 3:25; Romans 2:5-16; Ephesians 6:5-8; Ezekiel/Yechezkel 33:12-20; Jeremiah/Yirmiyahu 17:10, 21:14, 25:14, 32:19; Numbers/Bamidbar 14:18; Nahum/Nachum 1:3; Proverbs/Mishlei 24:12; Hosea/Hoshea 7:2; also Hebrews 12:4-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:6; Ezekiel/Yechezkel 3:20), and most of the time, those judgments include serious penalties because most sin is not trivial nor does it warrant complete dismissal. God will judge righteously, and people of God should be conscious that He holds His own even more accountable than the nonbeliever; the Lord will judge His people and it is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of El Hai, the living God (Hebrews 10:19-31; Psalm/Tehillim 135:14; Isaiah/Yeshayahu 3:13-15; also Isaiah/Yeshayahu 27:11; Tehillim 7:9).

Furthermore, because false and bad teachings are so commonplace, it ends up leading the people to sin over and over again because of sin they don’t know about or don’t acknowledge. The simple fact that sin continues on even though God is gracious to forgive sins that you don’t know you do, the continual cycle of sinning will still bring judgments and can make you sin more because the negative effects of sin include being shackled to fall to more temptations and more serious sins.

Because sin is so widespread and its effects continue to increase, even among devout believing communities, I try to bring you out of the cycle of sin that is so common - atone but sin again, so atone again and maybe God will keep listening and helping, but then continue in the same sins, but more likely God will refuse to hear or help anymore. It is often because of sin that God will refuse to hear your prayers (Isaiah/Yeshayahu 1:15-17; 1 Peter 3:7). This is what I’ve seen happen to the peoples of God of all faiths over and over again.

You need to think of atonement or forgiveness for sin, not as a cleanse all and “get out of jail free” card, but as God forgiving one who sincerely regrets doing wrong. The difference is, God forgives you when you are sorry, as a loving father should do, but He must also give penalty for what you’ve done. That almost always means you do NOT get a “get out of jail free” card. In fact, the definition of atonement is reparation or to make amends for a wrong[1.1]. For most sins, making amends does not simply involve saying, “I’m sorry,” but must come with sufficient penalty. Otherwise, who would resist sinning again if there were no consequences? Rampant evil is the result, which King Solomon, the wisest of all rulers (1 Kings/Melachim I 3:12, 4:31), noted when he said, Because the sentence for an evil deed is not executed quickly, therefore the hearts of mankind are fully set on doing evil (Ecclesiastes/Kohelet 8:11).

Without quick and sufficient penalties for sin, its harms continue on to multiply throughout society and create even more sin. We’ve been seeing this happen for decades now as the sins of modern society multiply and spread around the world. It isn’t because God does not judge the world’s sins, but because He often delays judgment and obscures why bad things happen. It doesn’t negate the fact that real, tangible reparations for your wrongs still need to be made to truly atone for sin, even though God’s forgiveness means that you are not completely forsaken as a child.

May you always come back to God and not let sin remove you from His loving care, as I have seen happen to even the most devout believers. Don’t believe this is happening? Don’t let God’s character of being slow to anger and His way of hiding spiritual truths fool you to think the Bible isn’t true about how God judges ALL sin (see Myth 1 in Light Within for more about why God hides things). To counter mass complacency, I praise God He already had me give concrete proof when I talked about sexual sins (see Practical Sex Matters and Practical Romance Matters), gun violence (see Who’s Fault Was The Massacre In Uvalde, Texas?), and God’s Alarm.

And there is even more proof in the downward spirals of worse and worse happening to people in societies around the world. Cancers, debilitating illnesses, and chemical addictions are more common and afflict younger and younger generations[1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.18, 1.19], infertility in both men and women are much more common, increasing 80% to 84%[1.5, 1.6], depression and suicide have been increasing, and in fact, suicide is a leading cause of death among both the young and old[1.13, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16, 1.17], homelessness and hunger are increasing, especially among children[1.7, 1.8, 1.9], more children suffer from harm, like gun violence and abuse, and more have disabilities, like chronic illnesses and autism[1.20, 1.21], more households, even among the wealthy are falling behind in paying bills[1.10, 1.11, 1.12]. The woes upon you, your families and communities are many more than I mentioned, but I can guarantee you that nearly every major affliction everyone suffers from is being caused by the sins they, their family, and community members do.

Researchers look for scientific, environmental, and medical reasons for serious negative trends in society, and sometimes they find a link to chemical use, behavior, or diet and suggest remedies which may, or more often, do not help. However, if you pay any attention to harmful trends in society then you have to concede things keep getting worse, not better. The world is looking in and blaming all the wrong things as I’ve said many times before. The ineffectiveness of science to treat these problems stems from only understanding a part of the picture and omitting the true root cause of chronic afflictions – the sins of society, which unfortunately, do affect the innocent, like our children who’ve done nothing wrong themselves to deserve severe judgments.

I’ve made this spiritual reality apparent for many years in discussions about sexual sins and many other things (for more about generational curses, see Light Within and About Aching Prosperity). What you, your leaders, and community members do, both spiritual and secular, can seriously harm your children and loved ones. This was made painfully apparent in talks about gun violence (see Who’s Fault Was The Massacre In Uvalde, Texas?) and other disasters (see God’s Alarm and Annunciation Church Shooting, and Another Affirmation to Take Warnings Seriously - Kerr County Texas Floods), so when I talk about what people commonly do wrong, may you take your involvement in sins that you may consider trivial or not really sin much more seriously. What decades of ministry has taught me is that the issues and sins the Lord has led me to talk about are not trivial at all, but are why you, your loved ones, and your communities are suffering more and more.

Sexual and Romantic Sins 10/1/2025
Sex, Romance, Dating, Marriage, Adultery, Normalizing Lust and Sex Work
  • In my previous discussions about sex and romance (see Practical Sex Matters and Practical Romance Matters), I talked about how common it is, even in believing communities, to have premarital sex. I also noted the serious consequences of it with statistical proofs. I didn’t discuss, though, how common it is to treat marriage and marital affairs trivially. In past years, I noted large numbers of people register on websites to find sex with people after they are married[1.22, 1.23, 1.24]. I’ve also noted people of God (both Jew and Christian) sharing stories of immoral sexual exploits.

Society around the world has saturated itself with inappropriate media that showcases promiscuity, sex work, rampant lusting, and adultery, so the influence is obvious. No one should consume or support such works, but for married people it can be much worse because adultery has an even higher penalty because God created the marriage covenant and deems it a strict sacred pact. So sins of adultery and spiritual adultery, where there is no physical contact but the immoral lusting and intent to commit adultery is there, all have worse penalties than sexual immorality between unmarried people (for more about what adultery is, see What is adultery? in Sex and Marriage – The Plain Truth).

The high percentage of people willing to commit adultery obviously shows no respect for the marriage covenant or vows of marriage. And things that seem trivial for married people, like using pornography or lustfully oogling others, is still spiritual adultery and are just as damaging as physical adultery.

Sexual sins are so common that I would say they account for a lot of the serious and deadly afflictions that happen to children and families, so put away all sexual immorality and lusting whether you are married or not. Knowing what effects these sins have on your children and family, why would you trade short sensual passions for the long-term well-being of your loved ones?

  • One survey found Irish women were quickest to be commit adultery, while Swedes closely followed[1.23, 1.24]. Another survey found 200,000 men and women in Israel wanted to find extramarital relations[1.22]. Some people might actually think those stats are a badge of honor in a world that idolizes sex and high promiscuity, but in truth, the numbers are terribly shameful, especially for Israel which is supposed to be a nation that represents God.

The New Testament calls quick to cheat, adulteress women weak or silly in 2 Timothy 3:6. It is best translated as weak-willed women weighed down with sins and led on by diverse lusts. This notes how many sins and inappropriate lusting, just like I’m speaking about here, shackle a person so that when a persistent lusting man comes near, they easily fall to immorality. Now, that scripture is not being explicit about sexual immorality but certainly is referring to it, because I know the apostle Paul includes arrogant false teachers in 2 Timothy 3. They are ones who are always learning [spiritual things but] never able to come to the knowledge of the truth (2 Timothy 3:7), and I have seen far too often in the church and other spiritual communities that they are plagued by predatory preachers who take advantage of women (for more, see Do not use God to whitewash your evils).

I don’t bring the numbers up to shame Irish or Swedish women or women in general, but I want to note them for good reasons. One, that all blame cannot be put on women. The dynamics of society are such that inappropriately persistent, lustful men are actually responsible for a lot of why too many women fall quickly to affairs and inappropriate relationships even if sex is not involved. That is the dynamic I’ve seen play out in society; lust is more rampant and uncontrolled among men, so I blame men even more than women for the stats. Look at common public behavior among men towards women and girls and rape statistics and it is easy to see that men are much more accountable, so do not tolerate inappropriate sexual advances whether you’re married or not or whether you’re male or female.

But still, even if you’re not one to cause trouble, heed the warning in 2 Timothy 3 about having many sins and lusts. It is not just a warning for women. Sins and lusts adversely affect everyone’s spiritual, physical, and mental well-being and strength of mind. The more problems you have, the easier you will fall to temptations. This, too, I have seen play out everywhere, even among the faithful of God, so try to be rid of as much sin and lusting as you can.

And one additional major note that again shows God working His wonders on the earth that I’ve shared before (Joel 2:30/Yoel 3:3; for good examples, see Gems That Prove Destiny And True Love Are Real and Countdown To Valentine's Day), is when I was looking at the scripture of 2 Timothy 3 that I just referenced about weak-willed women. I also noticed some very deliberate alignments that God made apparent. The survey that noted Irish women were the quickest to cheat after marriage said the average time of adultery was 3.6 years after marriage and the average age they were was 35.2 years old.

The full scripture reference is 2 Timothy 3:6, aligning with the 3.6 years and going with the meaning of the number 36, which most commonly means “enemy”; in this case, enemies of God, love, and what is right. You can even see Love encoded in the verse numbers with 2 in 2 Timothy 3:6, which means Love. If these numeric alignments are new to you, then please see Gems That Prove Destiny And True Love Are Real, Countdown To Valentine's Day, and The Meaning of Numbers. God has given me much with numeric alignments to back up what I teach, so I praise God again that He did it again; backing up what I said about 2 Timothy 3:6 referring to sexual immorality, even though it was not stated explicitly.

But furthermore, it is not just sexual immorality but sin and the workings of sin in general that God notes in these numbers, because the average age for an adulteress being 35.2 years old translates to 352 which God has led me to understand goes with Satan. These numerical alignments are nothing to scoff at if you see the sheer amount of correlations God has given with them (see The Meaning of Numbers for more) and that these alignments are often embedded in how scripture is numbered. That is not the working of mankind, nor Satan. How can you dispute it is not the work of God when our Bibles were orchestrated down to the very word and verse so that numeric meanings correspond with very important truths and themes? God has shown me many, many of these alignments over the years (see Predestined for alignments in my personal path).

All these alignments were deliberately made for me to talk about so that you would take heed and remove yourselves from all the sexual immorality and lusting that is going on. It’s destroying families and society in very apparent ways, but people dismiss the true spiritual reasons because the links to sin are not so obvious. But now, God is making things clear and plain to you, so remove yourselves and your families from using all inappropriate media that is popular everywhere, not just Ireland where I’ve seen news of how popular smut is in streaming media.

Continuing in these lusts will only destroy yourselves further, because the link of 352 to Satan is real. When you cultivate so much darkness in your lives, it gives the enemy of mankind very real ways to chain you into worse and worse sins, which will affect you and your loved ones as I’ve made clear in other places, such as bringing severe or deadly complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and afterwards, onto your children. Instead of cultivating sin and lust, cultivate virtues, which I talk about in Are the worst personality traits ruining your life?

Sins of Integrity 10/6/2025
Updated 10/22/2025

Dishonest Gain, Stealing, Greed

Sins related to issues of integrity are some of the most common because many of the problems I talk about here are often overlooked as sins. People think they are minor and inconsequential, like the “harmless white lie,” or they don’t think they’re sin at all, such as in plagiarism or not giving proper credit to original authors, and streaming, copying, or sharing media in inappropriate ways. However, just because you or most of society thinks something is OK, may very well not be, but instead is a form of stealing or dishonest gain.

Stealing is obviously a sin, as it is one of the Ten Commandments, but dishonest gain is something people often overlook and fail to see as sin even though God gives many examples that He hates dishonest gain (Jeremiah/Yirmiyahu 22:13-17; Habakkuk/Chavakuk 2:6; Psalm/Tehillim 119:36; Proverbs/Mishlei 20:23, 21:6; Ezekiel/Yechezkel 22:13-14; 1 Timothy 3:8; Titus 1:7, 1:10-11; 1 Peter 5:2). Also, in the modern age of copyrights, licensing, and intellectual property, there are many ways to steal that are not obvious.
  • Handling Money, Taxes, Tithes and Offerings – The issue of handling wealth was something the Lord guided me much on and I’ve talked a lot about it before, but sadly, the people of God, especially in the largest churches and denominations, fail to accept what God has shown me is true – They rob God because of how they handle money. Paying taxes and properly reporting income to authorities is another area people commonly slip in, especially, those who earn significant amounts from cash or undocumented payments. Like it or not, tax evasion and deliberately omitting or falsifying income to decrease or negate taxes or take advantage of tax cuts is dishonest gain, which I said the Lord hates, and can be a form of stealing depending on how much you falsify. See Properly Handling God's Money and Your Taxes for more about money issues and vows.

  • Plagiarism, Lack of giving proper credit and references, Using AI
    • Problems with giving proper credit to knowledge and references is one of the most common sins that spiritual teachers do, though it is also common among others who teach, write, or share experiences or knowledge. These issues have become widespread because it is easy and normal for people to do a quick Internet search and then use anything they find any way they wish, usually without giving proper reference to it or noting whether or not the copyright holders of that information or media allow you to use it as you intend (violating copyrights or licensing is another form of stealing that I will talk about later).

If you teach for God, do take heed of this because I see the Internet full of preaching that shares knowledge or facts that were taken from another source, sometimes copied verbatim from an original source, but they present the information as if they were the original author. The lack of citation may be from laziness or ignorance, but doing it constantly and without transparency about where the information came from stems from a spirit of arrogance and superiority, which I see false teachers act in. However, naive and overeager teachers also commonly slip in this, as do many writers, reporters, and educators.

You may have noticed how much I cite references in my work. The layman may think giving proper citation is unimportant, but it shows your level of professionalism in attention to detail, as well as, integrity. Giving wisdom and knowledge, especially spiritual and things of God, elevates people in many others’ eyes, so overeager preachers and sharers often fall to the lust of being esteemed and popular. They talk much of what they found out, simply running about with anything they think is important without knowing if it is good or authentic, and often do not cite anyone else. Little do they know, their bad habits are main reasons false teachings become so popular and widespread.

Proper scriptural references are especially important, but all references are necessary. They allow your work to be double-checked, as well as let people know that you did not originate all the work and ideas. Making yourself appear as if you got the ideas yourself is dishonest gain, so if you learned something unique from the work of someone else or you’re sharing context from scripture, then you should certainly give credit and properly reference the works.

The only area where giving proper credit is not as critical is in creative works. However, if your work relies a lot on ideas from someone else's work, then credit should be given. For example, someone shared a poem they wrote that included the themes of C.S. Lewis's "The Four Kinds of Love," but no credit was given to Lewis, so it appeared that the ideas came from the poem writer, which can be viewed as dishonest. To give proper credit, text like "Inspired by The Four Kinds of Love by C.S. Lewis" should be added after the poem's title.

When to give credit in creative works will vary a lot depending on how much or how you use someone else's work in it. Use good and respectable discretion when you use other people's work, whether for creative use or otherwise.

    • Using AI to do things for you is something I’ve looked at quite a bit as far as sin and ethics go. It may seem obvious that it is cheating or dishonest gain if you use AI to write or do most of a work for you, but a lot of people do not know how much sin was involved in developing the most widely used AI systems or that they (like chatbots) steal and plagiarize the works of others without giving proper references. Please see The Morality of Using AI and Deepfake Technology for more about using AI. Because of the many ethical problems with AI, I avoid using most generative AI, such as systems that write text or make images, videos, programming code, or other content from your instructions. However, it is not just generative AI that has a lot of ethical and sin related problems. See The Morality of Using AI and Deepfake Technology for more.

  • Copyrights, Licensing, and Terms of Service
    • Breaking copyright or licensing terms, or terms of service is a form of stealing that especially became widespread in the Internet Age. It is so widespread that I can confidently assert that nearly every one of you has fallen in the sin of stealing or thievery because of breaking copyrights, licensing, or terms of service. Why is it so common? It's because of the common misconception of free access on the Internet and the naive, unconcern most people have about copyrights and licensing.

Just because you can easily and freely access images, text, video, streaming media, music, books, movies, program code, games, apps, and other intellectual and creative property on the Internet, does NOT mean you can use it any way you wish, nor does it mean the free access is legal. Most people have heard of pirated movies and music - illegal copies of media distributed in unauthorized channels. Millions, if not billions of people, fell to the sin of thievery when the MP3 music download craze was popular in the 90's and early 2000's. This was when sharing apps, like BitTorrent, were used to share music and media files with anyone on the Internet.

There'd be no problem if the files being shared used content that was completely owned by whomever was sharing it. It becomes stealing when the content, like popular music in the MP3 download craze, is owned by artists and organizations, like record labels and publishers, who want to be paid for their media. The same is true for all kinds of media and works, like any streamed movies or events, ebooks, computer programs, games, and apps; anything that has license terms where payment is expected. If you get a product that is supposed to be paid for without paying for it through an authorized way, whether on the Internet or in physical media, like a DVD, then you are guilty of stealing (paying a unauthorized pirate distributor does not count).

There are a lot of unauthorized websites illegally distributing streaming media, like movies and sports events. There is even pirated content on YouTube, so double-check services and channels are legal distributors if they are not from official channels, like the big streaming networks or a publisher's own network, so that you don't get caught in stealing content.

The old way of stealing media, which is still available today, is to use cable TV or satellite TV cheatboxes or dodgy boxes. They are still popular in some countries, and now also used to view pirated streaming media[1.25, 1.26]. Do not use any devices or services that give unauthorized use of products that need to be paid for (paid to authorized publishers and distributors, not to pirate distributors and organizations).

Respect the licensing or terms of service for all products, even when you legally paid for them, because it becomes stealing when a paid license is used in ways that break the license. This is an area where people unexpectedly slip, because they are unaware of a product's licensing terms (very often because they do not read the lengthy licensing terms when a product is bought or installed). Some common ways this is done is installing apps on more devices than a license authorizes or moving an app to a new device that is not authorized. Installing and moving a Windows OS to a new computer is an example of this, because Windows licenses usually only cover the first device it was installed on.

Another example is unauthorized copying of media and using it in unauthorized ways, like using a screen or audio capture app or device to record streaming content, or using an app or other means to break copy protection, even if you paid for the media, like a rental or full purchase. Most media publishers have copyright and license restrictions on their media, for example, making a copy of a music album or movie that you paid for and giving the copy to your friend is a form of stealing. Paying for a movie rental but copying it for later unlimited use is also stealing. You only paid for a 1 or 2 day rental, so creating a full use copy violates licensing. Similarly, it is also stealing and dishonest gain to pay for a cheap seating ticket to an event but then sit at a seat that was priced higher.

Using a movie, music, or event you paid for, but showing it to a large audience also often violates licensing, so be aware of what limitations publishers have on their content, and respect any copy protection on products. Copy protection is a kind of lock that is not supposed to be broken, just like a padlock on a locker or a deadlock on your front door. People who put locks in place do not want free use and access to what is protected by the lock, so respect that.

You may not be aware that most text, program code, music, photos, images, and videos on the Internet cannot simply be copied and used freely because of copyrights and licensing, even though you have free access to it on your Internet browser. It used to be common practice for the Google image search engine to give any image in its search results without noting any copyright restrictions. But after legal battles from copyright owners, Google restricted their search engine and makes note of copyrights in searches, however, that doesn't stop the common practice of people clicking on any image they find on the Internet, saving it to their device, and then use it in their own content or work.

Doing that can break copyrights and becomes the sin of stealing when the copyright owners want payment for use of their content. It can also become dishonest gain, which the Lord also hates (scripture at top of section), when content is free (payment is not wanted) but the copyright owners restrict its use in some way. Common examples are books where there is copyright and permitted use text at the front. Even many Bibles have this text; they give people permission only to give short quotations and do not permit any larger scale copying or distribution of the text. Websites are another category which can be considered to be like copyrighted books. Short quotes from a website and citing the website and authors is permissible, but using its text or images in other ways is not, such as copying a picture from a website and using it in your own website or other works, like an ad or presentation. This is something people commonly fall in because they think all images on the Internet can be used freely.

The reality is, if copyright owners want payment for their product or media, or payment for using it, and you don't pay them, then it is stealing in God's eyes. That goes for photos, images, music, art, and any other content that copyright owners do not give free use of. So don't simply copy images or music off the Internet or anywhere else and use it in your public work, especially if it is for profit. I say "public" because there are permissible uses for copyrighted works, which I will talk about in Fair Use below. A common way people violate copyright is by using popular music in their YouTube or social media podcasting. Most music publishers and artists want you to pay licensing and royalty fees to use their music, so when you use it without permission, it is stealing and they have every right to collect money from you. There is some exceptions to this, which I will talk about in Fair Use below.

A clue that you cannot simply copy and use everything on a website is the copyright notice at the bottom of its pages. Text like “Copyright” and “All rights reserved” mean the authors or owners of the content do NOT give you complete and free license to use their content any way you want, so God can consider it stealing or dishonest gain if you use their content in inappropriate ways. If an image, video, or anything else has a watermark, author name, or logo on it, then consider that a copyright stamp and do not remove or omit it if you use it. Also, the year or date that goes with copyright text only specifies the date the work was created. It is not a copyright expiration date, so ignore copyright dates if you want to know if a copyright is no longer valid. That usually only happens when a work goes into the public domain, which usually is many years after a person's death or an organization's dissolution.

Another common way copyrights are violated is in the creation of websites and computer programs and apps. Just like with images being freely accessible on a website, the program code behind a website (usually HTML and Javascript), is also commonly stolen and used inappropriately even though the program code is explicitly marked with a copyright statement. AI technology is especially guilty of this, because AI systems are trained by taking all the content from a site: text, images, audio, video, program code and all. If you are a programmer, coder, or website designer, be aware that many websites do not allow copying of the code behind their sites. It can be considered stealing and dishonest gain, just like using an artist's painting or photographer's photo without permission and profiting from them.

Use Royalty-Free media (or public domain), but avoid AI generated - Because copyright and license violations can easily be a form of stealing, I will make sure I use media that is copyright free or royalty-free, like from royalty free stock library sites such as pixabay.com or pexels.com and royalty free music libraries. However, be careful doing this, too, because of the popularity of AI generated media now (I've found a lot of it on royalty-free sites), a lot of content that was AI generated innately violates copyrights and licensing, so I avoid anything that was AI generated unless I know it was generated from a safe AI product, like Adobe's AI systems which were ethically developed. See The Morality of Using AI and Deepfake Technology for more about the problems with using AI.

Account sharing is another common way people can slip in licensing terms. It seems like a good cost savings strategy to share your streaming or shopping account with family and friends, but streaming media networks, like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney, etc., and shopping clubs, like CostCo and Sam's Club, often have restrictions in how you can share your account with others. Be aware of them because giving a friend access to your streaming account or to any other service provider can be considered stealing if the provider does not want access to be shared.

    • Fair Use - Copyright law can be complex. I've worked in publishing of media of all kinds for decades, so I've a fair bit of knowledge on good and bad practices when comes to copyrights and using the works of others. There are some ways that copyrighted works CAN be used in "unauthorized" ways. This is called Fair Use, but applications are also very limited, both legally and spiritually. God may be even more strict about copyright and license issues than world governments because they involve the sins of thievery, dishonesty, swindling, and arrogance. Try to avoid violating copyrights and licensing, because sin always has penalties, even though God grants forgiveness and atonement - the first topic in this thread.

As far as Fair Use goes, it is commonly accepted to use copyrighted works to teach about a subject (not simply blanket fair use for all educational purposes), to criticize or parody, to report news related to the work (again, not simply blanket fair use for any reporting purposes), and to copy or use privately (like as a creative reference or to make personal backup copies of something). A more specific example of Fair Use in the violation of media licensing is to make a copy from an authorized source, like streaming media, that was legally fully purchased (not simply rented), so that the copy can be edited, like to remove explicit language or inappropriate content, and then use the edited copy for personal use only.

Most publishers do not want their works copied at all, but the problem of appropriately "cleaning up" media that is mostly acceptable so that it can be enjoyed privately is a valid application of Fair Use. If you have doubt that any violation of copyrights and licensing is still sin, even for an appropriate private use, then don't do it, or if you've already done it, then pray to formally break any curses from it and ask the Lord that you not be accused for something that is reasonable fair use.

Sometimes copyright and license terms are unreasonable and overly strict, like no copying or editing ever, because publishers are paranoid about theft and losing profits. That is a valid concern for very popular media, like movies and music from popular artists, but being overly strict and trying to prohibit fair use is greedy, inappropriate, and breaking the Second Greatest Commandment to love one another as yourself. That's because you are potentially cursing people for violating copyrights and licenses even in cases of what most people would consider to be Fair Use. So as a note to media producers, do not be overly greedy or arrogant about how you copyright and license your works. Allow for appropriate Fair Use or your sins will adversely affect your works and businesses.

What is almost NEVER Fair Use is using others' work without permission, whether it was formally copyrighted or not, for your profit or any other significant personal gain, like fame, prestige, advancement, or to pass off others' work as your own which is dishonest gain I talked about above in the Plagiarism section. I know of musicians who shared their new unpublished song with a colleague who then produced and published the song as their own without any permission or credit for the actual author. Dishonesty like that may seem like an easy steal when a lot of profit can be made and there is no proof that you stole someone else's work, but think again. What cannot be proven in state courts will never pass God. Your stealing and dishonesty will surely be judged and your life and works will be cursed for it, which can end up much, much worse than doing things the right way and working with and paying royalties to the original author.

Remember I mentioned using popular music for your videos and podcasts often violates copyright and licensing, and therefore makes you a thief? The only exception is when you post the media on a platform that respects copyrights to the original artists and pays them royalties. Fortunately, YouTube does this for most copyrighted published music now. Facebook does too, as well as Instagram, because they are owned by the same company. These services will flag your video upload as having a copyright violation but also tell you that no action is needed if there is no problem. That is because they pay royalties to copyright owners, and so you'll be satisfying licensing terms for using someone else's music or videos on these platforms.

However, be aware that not all artists' copyrighted music and work is registered and acknowledged by services like YouTube and Facebook, Instagram. And I'm not aware of many other services where you upload your own content that respect artist royalties, so if they do not pay original artists for the content you use, even on YouTube and Facebook/Instagram, then you're violating copyright and licensing. It's safest to use public domain or royalty free music, but again, avoid AI generated music because of the many ethical problems with most AI providers.

Another area of Fair Use is how to use program code like from websites, which I talked about before. Simply copying and using all or most of the code from a website that has copyright restrictions is not Fair Use, but using it to understand how code should work in your own projects is Fair Use. This is no different from using a popular artist's work as a reference. Style and technique can be copied, but not the work in entirety or large part. Programmers should use good discretion in what they copy. Some code can be copied verbatim because there are only so many ways to do something, sometimes only one way. But copying a work's copyrighted code libraries is not Fair Use, so you should use royalty free libraries or build your own from what you learn from a copyrighted work.

Copyright violations with stolen or unauthorized use of program code are a major reason why I avoid using apps and programs from markets, like China, where thievery, unlicensed product copying, and other unethical business practices are very common. China certainly isn't the only market where there are a lot of ethical violations and it is very common in the programming world to simply copy things without concern for copyrights, so don't prejudge a company or product because of where it comes from. This is a widespread problem, and consumers should examine overall reputation no matter where a product or service is made or sold, and avoid using products from questionable manufacturers and vendors. This is something I will talk about more in the Cheating section.

    • How to remedy copyright, licensing and other issues of theft - Fixing or truly atoning for sins that have to do with stealing usually need more than asking God for forgiveness. Things that were stolen, pirated, or attained in unauthorized ways should be destroyed if you cannot or do not want to pay for them legally or obey their licensing terms. All unauthorized copies should be destroyed. Getting rid of stolen material not only clears you of keeping what was stolen or unauthorized, but it also helps get rid of curses attached to the stealing. Physical things can be cursed when they've been stolen or attained in bad ways, much like things become cursed when they are used in other sins, like sorcery or divination.

However, getting rid of stolen things won't prevent judgment coming upon you, because you already did the stealing. It will help lessen your afflictions if you sincerely ask God for forgiveness and do everything you can to fix it, though, like throwing away or destroying stolen material. So if you find you've violated copyrights or licenses, do what you can so that you are no longer in violation, and so you do not continue in thievery. That means getting rid of cheat boxes, pirated material or services, and material that was copied illegally. Stop using unauthorized streaming sources. Stop sharing your streaming accounts. Stop using copyrighted media without authorization, and if you do use things in Fair Use, make sure you include text that credits the original author or copyright owner where you have the material on public display, like on social media and YouTube.

Pull media you created that includes unauthorized copyrighted content from public viewing, and if you profited from it, you should pay the copyright owners of the media a reasonable percentage of profits or pay for official licensing of the media through a clearing house or by directly working with the publishers. Official licensing can be very expensive for popular music and clips from movies, so your only choice may be to pull your media from all distribution and viewing.
