HaShem - The Name (Art/Poem/Song)

This song emphasizes God's many names and titles, most of which were originally given in Hebrew. This was lost in most translations of Scripture, especially where the Lord's Hebrew holy name was replaced by the all-caps title, LORD. These names are the ones the Israelites and Jesus's family and disciples called the Lord by. They spoke Hebrew, Aramaic, and Ancient Greek - the original languages of the Bible. Also remember that Jesus is the English translation of the Lord's name and was not a language in Jesus' time.

It generally does not matter how we pronounce God's names or their many translations, but I like to use His Hebrew names, because they were the first given and Christians have lost their sense of heritage with the Jews. We are one People under Christ with the Jews (Romans 10:12-13; 1 Corinthians 12:12-26; Galatians 3:26-29; Ephesians 2:11-22, 3:6; Colossians 3:11; 1 Peter 2:9-10; also Romans 12:4-5) and should know that heritage and God's actual names as they were given.

See the About section after the song for more information about God's names.

About The Hebrew Names and Titles
In general it does not matter how we pronounce the Hebrew since there are different dialects and linguistic variations. The suggested pronunciations are given in quotes and taken from common, modern dialects.

Pronunciation Key:
'ah' is the A sound, as in fah and lah
'ay' is the long A sound, as in hay and say
'e' or 'eh' is the short E sound, as in peck and heck
'ee' is the long E sound, as in see and bee
'i' or 'ih' is the short I sound, as in pick and sick
'yy' is the long I sound, as in bye and eye
'oh' is the long O sound, as in woe and glow
'oo' is the long OO, as in flu and shoe
'uh' is the short U sound, as in muck and run

Except where noted the following names and titles are Hebrew.
  • אָבִֽינוּ - Avinu "Ah-vee-noo/Ah-vee-noh" (Father)
  • אָבִינוּ אֱלֹהִים - Avinu Elohim "Ah-vee-noo El-oh-heem" (Father Mighty God) - see Elohim
  • אֲדֹנָי - Adonai "Ah-dohn-nyy" (Lord)
  • אֲדֹנָי יהוה - Adonai Yahovah "Ah-dohn-nyy Yah-hoh-vah" (Lord Yahovah) - see Yahovah
  • אל - El "El" (God)
  • אל עליון - El Elyon "El El-yohn" (God Most High)
  • אל עֹולָֽם - El Olam "El Oh-lahm" (Everlasting God)
  • אל שדי‬ - El Shaddai "El Shah-dyy" (God Almighty)
  • אלהים - Elohim "El-oh-heem" (Mighty God)
  • עֶלְיוֹן - Elyon "El-yohn" (Most High)
  • המשׁיח - HaMashiach "Hah-Mah-shee-ahk" (The Christ - The Messiah or The Anointed One; John 1:41)
  • השֵׁם - HaShem "Hah-Shehm/Hah-Shim" (The Name)
  • יהוה - Jehovah "Jah-hoh-vah" - an common English pronunciation of Yahovah that uses the J sound; however, there is no J sound in Hebrew; Yahovah is the preferred pronunciation; see Yahovah
  • Jesus "Jee-zuhs" - the English pronunciation of Yehoshua/Yeshua/Joshua; it comes from the translation of the Latin, Iesus, which came from the Greek, Iēsous/Ιēςους/Ιησους/Iesoua, which in turn came from the transliteration of the Hebrew, Yehoshua/Yeshua (the Hebrew for Joshua - יְהוֹשֻׁעַ ), into Greek, so Jesus is Greek for Joshua1; this layered translation came about because the New Testament was originally mostly written in Greek and then translated into Latin and then into English; it is interesting to note that the Old English gematria values for Jesus and Joshua are both 444, which puts a stamp of authenticity for the two names being equal; see Yehoshua for more information
  • משׁיח - Mashiach "Mah-shee-ahk" (Christ - Messiah or Anointed One; John 1:41)
  • עֹולָֽם - Olam "Oh-lahm" (Everlasting)
  • רוּחַ הקֹדֶשׁ - Ruach HaKodesh "Roo-ahk Hah-Koh-desh/Hah-Koh-dish" (Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost)
  • שדי‬ - Shaddai "Shah-dyy" (Almighty/Most Powerful)
  • יְהוֹשׁוּעַ - Yehoshua / Yeshua "Yeh-hoh-shoo-ah/Yeh-shoo-ah" (Jesus/Yeshu/Joshua) - The Lord's Hebrew name in Christ, The Son; it means Yah/Yahovah saves or Yah/Yahovah is salvation, which goes with Matthew 1:21, "...you are to give Him the name Yeshua [Jesus], because He will save His people from their sins."; Joshua is the same name as Yehoshua or Jesus1; the difference came from the translation of different languages; Joshua is the English translation of the Hebrew Yehoshua/Yeshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ), while Jesus came from the English translation of the Latin and Greek translations of the same Hebrew name (see Jesus above); it's interesting to note that both Joshua and Jesus have the same Old English gematria value of 444, which means absolute/infinite hope3; it puts God's stamp of authenticity on the translation process of coming to the name of Jesus since God has detailed control over our languages; I also prefer Yeshua for the pronunciation of the Lord's Hebrew name in Christ, since it is what Jesus was called by when He was a man, while the long version of this name is Yehoshua, which is a pronunciation is given in the KJV, the oldest English Bible we have, when Joshua's name was changed from Oshea/Hoshea by Moses in Numbers 13:16, "...and Moses called Oshea, the son of Nun, Yehoshua."; This pronunciation is also used by modern Israelies2
  • יְהוֹשׁוּעַ המשׁיח - Yeshua HaMashiach "Yesh-oo-ah Hah-Mah-shee-ahk" (Jesus the Christ)
Yeshua Mashiach "Yesh-oo-ah Mah-shee-ahk" (Jesus Christ)- see Yehoshua and Mashiach
  • יָהּ - Yah "Yah"
יהוה - Yahovah "Yah-hoh-vah" (Yehovah/Jehovah/Yahweh/Yahveh/Yahuah/Yahuwah) - The Lord's proper holy name as Father; Yah is its short form; it means The Existing One or Self Existing One; the Hebrew is also called the Tetragrammaton for its four letters (YHWH/YHVH in Latin); this name was often replaced in Bible translations with the all-caps title, LORD; many Jews don't wish to use or pronounce this name and use Adonai (LORD) instead, because of a sense of reverence; they also spell God as G-d out of similar reverence, but I believe these tendencies are overly religious; God gave His holy names and never said we shouldn't use them, in fact, the following scripture actually use His Hebrew holy name in the original Hebrew and note God wants us to remember it forever:

    1. "God, furthermore, said to Moses, 'Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘Yahovah, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My Memorial-Name (name to be remembered) to all generations." (Exodus 3:15)

    2. "I am Yahovah, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to graven images." (Isaiah 42:8)

    3. "For You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not recognize us. You, O Yahovah, are our Father, Our Redeemer from of old, is Your name." (Isaiah 63:16)

    4. "For I am Yahovah, your God, Who stirs up the sea and its waves roar - Yahovah of Hosts is His name." (Isaiah 51:15)

These are four verses that explicitly note how God is stating what His name is and that we should remember it. If you look at the original language text of the Old Testament, you will see His original Hebrew names are used everywhere.
